Glider training
The gliding license (SPL)
The training to obtain this license is carried out at the Wels airfield. As the largest flight school in Upper Austria, we offer glider training courses once a year.
The theoretical training takes about three months. The practical part begins in spring and lasts approx. 4 to 5 months (depending on the weather). During the spring course, the practical flight training mainly takes place at weekends. takes place at weekends. You start with the winch.
In addition, theoretical lessons take place once or twice a week by arrangement, with a total of around 100 hours in evening classes. The lessons take place mainly in the evening in consultation with the course participants. take place
Training is carried out in accordance with EASA guidelines.
Therefore, more flying hours than currently required by law are already flown under the supervision of the flight instructor. (15 hours flying time, navigation flight, outlanding exercises, hazard briefing, etc.).
The total cost of EASA glider training (winch launch type) is around 2,900 euros.
This includes the flight fees, the training fees, the BFZ radio certificate, the club membership fee, the membership fee for the current year and the official fees.
With the basic license you are entitled to fly single-seater and two-seater gliders with the type of take-off you have obtained.
Gliders used (approved for training):
D-6321 - Schleicher ASK 21, two-seater, 17 meter wingspan
D-3492 - Schleicher ASK 23, single-seater, 15 meter wingspan
OE-0748 - Schleicher K8, single-seater, 15 meter wingspan
Prerequisites
Required documents:
- Aeromedical examination report by a specially authorized doctor. A list of all doctors in Austria can be found on the homepage of the Austrian Aero Club. Costs between € 50.00 and € 100.00. (Normally glasses/contact lenses are no obstacle to flight training).
- Police clearance certificate in the original (extract from the criminal record): Not older than 6 months!
Minimum age 15 years
You receive your license at the age of 16 after successfully passing the theoretical and practical test.
Recommended maximum age at start of training 60 years
Theoretical training
The theoretical training is held by our gliding instructors in the training room. The following subjects are taught:
- General aviation
- Instrumentology
- Rules of conduct in special cases
- Aerodynamics
- Aviation meteorology
- Geography and navigation
- Air law
- First aid
- Radio operator certificate (BFZ)
Practical training
Practical training begins on a 2-seater glider with a certified gliding instructor on board. Around 40 flights at dual controls are required before you are ready to fly solo. The first solo flight, at the instructor's discretion, is one of the many unforgettable highlights of a pilot's life.
The second part of the training includes a similar number of further solo and familiarization flights.
This results in a number of approx. 70 to 80 flights until the certificate is obtained. Due to the fact that each student should not make more than ten launches per flight day (5 in the morning / 5 in the afternoon) afternoon) and the fact that gliding is a weather-dependent outdoor sport, the time required for the spring course is 4 to 5 months. In the course of the training you obtain take-off type authorization: either F-tow (aerotow) or winch launch.
Examination
Prerequisites for the exam are at least 30 landings alone on board and gliding flights of at least three hours within the last 24 months, whereby the last 3 flights/landings are counted as exam flights. In addition, a comprehensive theory test, which should not be an obstacle due to the high quality of the training.
