The Wels airfield - LOLW
100 hectares of paradise
Since 1972, our airfield has been the largest public civil airfield in Europe under club ownership and the third oldest airfield in Austria. We have one asphalt and two grass runways as well as a skydiving circle.
Safety is a top priority
The Wels airfield is uncontrolled and, due to its public status, there is a duty to operate. This means that we offer year-round operation with snow clearance. The operating hours are daily from 8 am/10 am until ECET (End of Civil Evening Twilight), i.e. until the end of civil twilight, or 8 p.m., 7 days a week. These times can be extended if necessary and on request. Wels is also a customs airport. This means that flights to and from countries outside the EU are possible without bureaucracy. Our arrivals and departures are considered particularly safe. There is no obstruction within a radius of 3° and with the PAPI system (Precision Approach Path Indicator) we have an optical approach aid. Generous taxiways offer optimum safety on the ground.
The Wels airfield is also used as an emergency landing and training area for the Austrian Armed Forces and for ambulance flights with jets and helicopters. The reason for this is its proximity to the hospital. On the subject of safety, we organize regular training training sessions and exchange information with the Austrian Armed Forces, the police, the rescue service and the fire department. The high level of flight safety in Wels is also due to the allocated airspace. We have our own approach and take-off sectors, our own gliding own gliding area as well as a test and aerobatic area. Approach assistance is provided by radar support from Linz Airport (IFR-VFR).
Impressive infrastructure
Around 80 aircraft are permanently stationed in our architecturally impressive hangar and outbuildings. We offer our members and guests hangar facilities and free parking. At our commercial filling station for AVGAS, Jet-A1, Super and oil is free of mineral oil tax. We recommend taking a cab to the city centers of Wels or Linz. The proximity to the train station and highway is also appreciated by our guests. We can also offer seminar and meeting rooms for up to 20 people. Afterwards, head to our restaurant „Möwe“ with home-style cooking and a cozy atmosphere.
Symbiosis of business, technology & nature
The idea that aviation is only for the rich is a myth - especially in a club like „Weisse Möwe Wels”. Volunteer members form an efficient organization to run the club and the airfield. club and the airfield. We also employ four people in administration and management. It is clear that our turnover is comparable to that of a medium-sized company and that we are therefore an economic factor for the region. and therefore also represent an economic factor for the region.
The WMW and nature
The association largely bears the costs of operating the airfield itself. Without the voluntary work of many club members, many things would not be financially viable. Wels airfield is a jewel and a prime example of harmony between man, technology and nature. between man, technology and nature. We are home to curlews and many other small animals that have become rare, as well as bee colonies. When an airplane taxis to the runway, the hares stop. If a person passes by, they run away. We live the coexistence of nature and technology every day.
